Try to explain why the book has been banned from some libraries and schools in the U.S. (and consider both points of view).

possible answers:

I think the Harry Potter books were banned from the libraries and schools because the parents think that these books could be a bad influence for their children. Maybe they are afraid that thierchildren have bad dreams or something else. Or that the kids would like to be like Harry. But I think that the Harry Potter books don´t have a bad influence. I think it is very interesting to read the books because they are no normal books. Axel

Many parents and teachers think that Harry Potter influences their children in bad ways. They think Harry Potter contains too much darf magic.
I don´t think so becaus you´d have to ban most of the childrens literature if you argue this way. I think it is good that Harry Potter books were written and that the books contain such topics as how to have friends who help you - topics which are not normal today. The books are not only for younger readers. I also think that children must be confronted with reality and so the book doesn´t have much bad influence on them. A computer game is much worse for them. Children have to learn that life isn´t always easy. Stefan

The books are read by a lot of children and by even more adults. It is Harry Potter who made people read again. Many people say that the books are telling fascinating stories. But the book has enemies. People who are against Harry Potter explain that there is too much hate in the book. The book shows violence among the acting persons. Christains and conservatives are talking about the book because it lets children read about aworld of wizards and witches. They think that this is not good for children to read. Perhaps there is the fear that children really could believe in an unreal world.
But many books and films are shwoing superheroes and unnatural powers. And the author has an easy answer for those who don´t want the Harry Potter books: if you don´t like them, then don´t read them. Jessica

It was banned because some parents don´t want that children read this book. They think the book shows too much violence and that it isn´t good for their children to read about this magical world because they could think it is true and this would promote witchcraft. I don´t think so because if these children don´t read Harry Potter, they will read some other book with action heroes and beasts. In my opinion this is worse.
The book shows the problems in a child´s life and for children it is good to know that everybody has these problems and that they are not alone. Andy

Schools might have banned the books because they realized that all the pupils were interested in it. Perhaps they were afraid that students would be talking in school about Harry Potter the whole time and have no time to study anymore. It might also be that they don´t think that a book for children is a good kind of literature.
I can´t understand these schools. Isn´t it better to read any stuff than watching soaps on TV? I don´t think that Harry Potter should be banned.
The libraries have better reasons to have no Harry Potter books because after very new book, the demand is bigger than before. Perhaps they are afraid of crowds ofkids in their rooms. Perhaps they think they might steal something or decide to break into the library to get the new books first. I don´t know. Tobi

The US is known for their sometimes strange points of view. This time with the Harry Potter books it is explainable but in my opinion it´s not really reasonable. But let´s see. The books deal with things like witchcraft for one thing. That alone is odd for certain people. Isn´t witchcraft against church and done by the servants of the devil? Oh well, but there is more. There is no God mentioned in the book. The only one with what is closest to divine power isDumbledore. How blasphemic!
Then we also have to see that Harry breaks the school rules or the rules of any other authority all the time. A whole lot of parents and teachers don´t think that is a good thing to get their little kids confronted with.
But I think the biggest problem especially for US people is the sometimes pretty open prejudism against the normal people. We, Muggles, are less good than wizards? No American patriot is less than anything or anyone in the whole world and the universe! Ho could somebody write that we all are? I think that is why it is banned. And also a lot of Americans don´t want to be confronted with un-American oddities. And Harry Potter is a weird book! Holger
