The Dursleys
Mr Dursley is a director of a firm called Grunnings, which sells drills. He is a very big and beefy man. Mrs Dursley is the opposite of him. She is very thin. The Dursley have a son, Dudley (11 years old). The Dursleys don`t want to have anything to do with Petunia´s sister (she is Harry`s mother) and her family (Page: 8 „This boy was another good reason for keeping the Potters away; they didn`t want Dudley mixing with a child like that.“) When Harry`s parents died ten years ago the Dursleys were not very happy to take care of Harry, but they had to do that. Dudley`s parents are very afraid that other people will speak badly about them because Harry tends to do crazy and abnormal things and so they don`t want him very much.Mr Dursley doesn`t understand the world of today. He doesn`t believe in mystic stuff and thinks he lives in a crazy world because he sees this things but wouldn`t believe them (Page: 8 „But it struck Mr Dursley that this was probably some silly stunt – these people were obviously collecting for something ... yes, that would be it.”). The Dursleys handle Harry like an animal. They put him into a cupboard where he has to sleep since he started living with the Dursleys. Every morning Petunia wakes Harry with a shrill and hateful voice (Page: 26 „Up! Get up! Now! Harry woke with a start. His aunt rapped on the door again. Up! She screeched.“).
Mrs Dursley loves her son Dudley more than Harry so she wants that everything will be right on his birthday. But Harry`s birthday is not very important for her (Page: 26 „ I want everything perfect on Dudley`s birthday"). Dudley gets more and bigger presents from his parents to birthday than Harry (Page: 26 „Dudley had got the new computer he wanted, not to mention the second television and the racing bike. Exactly why Dudley wanted a racing bike was a mystery to Harry, as Dudley was very fat and hated exercise“). Harry doesn`t get such nice things for his birthday. Sometimes the Dursleys give him a pair of old socks from Dudley.
But the Dursleys are not the only muggle people (non magic people) who can`t love Harry. Marge, a relation of the Dursleys, hates him (Page: 29 „ We could phone Marge, uncle Vernon (Mr Dursley) suggested. Don`t be silly Vernon, she hates the boy“). Dudley and his friends hit Harry and so he wanders around a lot, thinking about his future (Page: 39 „but Dudley was the stupiest and biggest of his gang. He was the leader. The rest of them were all quite happy to join in Dudley`s favorite sport: Harry hunting“).
Draco Malfoy
When Draco meets Harry, Ron and Hemione in the train to Hogwarts he is very arrogant because he says that the Weasleys have more children than they can afford. He also says that Harry should have the right friends like him, a son of a great wizarding family (Page: 120 „My father told me all the Weasleys have red hairs, freckles and more children than they can afford. He turned back to Harry. You`ll soon find out some wizarding families are much better than others, Potter. You don`t want to go making friends with the wrong sort. I can help you there.“). He likes to show off and tells stories about how good he is (Page: 157 „Malfoy did certainly talk about flying a lot. He complained loudly about first-years never getting in the house Quidditch teams and told long, boastful stories which always seemed to end with him“). He hates Harry because he can`t influence him. Harry is the only one who doesn`t try to be his friend and that makes Draco very angry so he acts in all situations against Harry.
