A Conversation with J.K. Rowling. A Good Scare

(Time, November 6, 2000)
J.K.Rowling didn’t write the books for very young children. She cried at the end of the IV. book because she didn’t want to kill someone, but she said it must be. ”That is how people die in those situations” she said. She had qualms when her 7 year old daughter read this because she thinks it was too scary but then it really wasn’t and she doesn’t know really why.

J.K.Rowling thinks evil is very attractive because evil persons have much power and glory. When she gets feedback from kids, she sometimes is wondering about that. They are mostly worried about Ron because at the time, they were wondering which character was going to die in the fourth book. Some kids said to her, that she shouldn’t kill Hermione. They think she is not vulnerable but Rowling thinks she is very vulnerable and compares Hermione with herself in her childhood.

Joanne Rowling hates gratuitous violence and so she hates video games. She say that you can’t compare the characters of a video game with the characters of a book. She also hates censorship because she think that every parents must decide for their own kids what they should read.
